About the UMI Arts Indigenous MarketsThe UMI Arts Indigenous Markets – are a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts, crafts, performance, dance, music and food. They take place from 4pm–9pm on the last Friday of every month, from May to October (with special dates in August - see above). The Markets are a free event, and locals and visitors alike are invited to come along. The site for the Markets is in the heart of the Cairns Esplanade, next to the swimming lagoon. The lively Esplanade is a relaxed and vibrant area for families and community to come together to celebrate the breadth and diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and life. The live performance stage and open mic generates a great vibe and showcases our wealth of local talent. The Markets provide employment and skills development opportunities for Indigenous artists, musicians and performers as well as stage/event coordinators. With sales returns going directly to the stall holders, the Markets are also designed as a way to support local arts and crafts people, and to promote cultural tourism and economic cultural development in the region. The UMI Arts Indigenous Markets are supported by the Cairns Esplanade, Cairns Regional Council, Arts Queensland (Building Skills and Opportunities) and the Cairns Regional Council (Community Partnerships).
